Weather at Howick, Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland Climate

Auckland has a temperate climate, with warm summers, and cool winters.  It's coastal location prevents large diurnal and seasonal temperature fluctuations.  Temperatures rarely exceed 30°C, and it does not snow in winter (but once in 1939 it did).  Many suburbs do not fall to 0°C in Winter but some areas record frosts every year.  Rainfall averages between 1000mm and 1500mm across the greater Auckland area, with the elevated Waitakere ranges in the west receiving 2000mm per year.  The far north of the Auckland region is more subject to heavy rains in storm systems, and Leigh, North Auckland, holds NZ's record high 1 hour rainfall of 109mm (4.3inches) in one hour.  Thunder occurs on 15-20 days of the year, and hail on about 5 days.  Tornado events are not uncommon, but are generally extremely local EF0 to EF1 events.  Dominant winds are from the W-SW.  W and SW winds often bring cloudy periods and showers.  S winds often bring fine cool weather.  E and NE winds often bring rain.

I monitor the weather conditions in Howick, an eastern suburb of Auckland.
